The ratio matters more than the exact pixels. A 1620 × 720 image has the same 9:4 shape as 3240 × 1440 and splits cleanly; it just looks softer on large screens.
Why the tiles are 3:4
Posts on TikTok are 9:16, but the profile grid does not show them that way. Each thumbnail is cropped to roughly 3:4, which trims the top and bottom of a tall post. A 1080 × 1920 post shows only its middle 1080 × 1440 on your profile.
So if you cut a banner into 9:16 pieces, each piece loses about an eighth at the top and the bottom in the grid. Cut 3:4 pieces instead and the grid shows every pixel you designed.
Full-screen tiles
A 3:4 photo fills the grid perfectly, but when someone taps it, TikTok shows it on a 9:16 screen with empty space above and below. If that bothers you, make the tiles 9:16 and keep the grid area in the middle.
In numbers: each tile is 1080 × 1920, with the 1080 × 1440 grid area in the middle and 240 pixels above and below it. In RepostGrid, turn on Full-screen tiles under Adjust and the editor shades the extra bands for you.
Safe zones: what TikTok covers
A few things sit on top of every banner. Keep faces and text out of these spots:
- Bottom-left of every tile: the view count on your posts grid, or the repost date on your Reposts tab. Leave roughly the bottom eighth of each tile, left half, clear.
- Top-left of pinned tiles: a small red Pinned tag.
- The two cut lines: at 1080 and 2160 pixels across, where TikTok shows a thin gap between posts. Thin letters or eyes on those lines get sliced.

If your image is a different size
- Wider than 9:4: Fill crops the sides; Fit keeps everything and adds a blurred or colored band above and below.
- Taller than 9:4: Fill crops the top and bottom; drag to choose which part stays.
- Smaller than 3240 pixels wide: it still works. The tiles export at 1080 pixels wide, so a very small image looks soft. Don't upscale it in another app first; that only adds a second round of blur.
Instagram sizes, for comparison
Instagram's profile grid switched to 3:4 thumbnails in early 2025, so the same 1080 × 1440 tiles work there too. A 3×3 Instagram grid is 3240 × 4320, exactly like TikTok. Carousels are different: they are one post, usually 1080 × 1350 (4:5) per slide. See how to post an Instagram grid.
