Instagram's profile grid used to show every post as a square. Since early 2025 it shows a taller 3:4 rectangle instead. Grid templates built for squares now get their edges trimmed, and the seams between posts stop lining up.

How to post an Instagram grid
Post the 1st tile first
The 1st tile is the bottom-right one. Instagram shows your newest post top-left, so the grid builds up from the bottom.
Keep going in order
Post the 2nd, 3rd and so on without anything in between. File names start with the posting number so they stay in order.
Check, then fix if needed
If a tile lands in the wrong spot, Instagram's grid rearranging lets you drag it into place.
Tips for a grid that holds together
- Start tall. A 3×3 grid is taller than it is wide (3:4 overall), so portrait photos and posters need the least cropping. Landscapes work better as a one- or two-row grid.
- Mind the cut lines. The grid is cut at one third and two thirds across and down, and Instagram leaves a thin white gap there. Keep eyes, faces and small text off those lines.
- Make each tile work alone. Followers see the tiles one at a time in their feed. A tile that is only empty sky looks like a mistake there, so give every piece some detail.
- Plan the top row. On a phone, the top row is what people see first when they open your profile. Put the strongest part of the picture there.
Grid or carousel?
A grid is several posts that form one picture on your profile. A carousel is one post that people swipe through. If you want a panorama that stays in a single post, use the carousel splitter: it slices the image into 4:5 or square slides numbered left to right.
